Lehua Honey
|
The Ohi'a Lehua tree is a flowering evergreen native to the islands of Hawaii. Native Hawaiian traditions describe the tree as sacred to Pele (the volcano Goddess), and Laka (the hula Goddess). It produces these absolutely brilliant flowers, ranging from yellow to red, which are often seen on traditional garlands called 'lei'. In Hawaiian mythology, Ohi'a and Lehua were two lovers. Pele fell in love with Ohi'a, but he spurned her advances. In a fit of jealousy and rage, she transformed him into a tree. Lehua was devastated, but the other other gods took pity and turned her into a flower, placing her upon the Ohi'a.
The honey produced by Lehua is very light and sweet, and crystallizes very fine. This has become the new office favorite!
